Binance Achieves ISO Certification for Responsible AI Governance
Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency platform by user count and trading volume, has announced it has been awarded the ISO/IEC 42001 certification, a global standard for responsible governance of artificial intelligence (AI).
This certification underscores Binance’s dedication to the ethical, transparent, and secure adoption of AI technologies across all its operations. The company aims to build trust with its users and stakeholders.
What is ISO/IEC 42001?
Published in December 2023, ISO/IEC 42001 is an international standard that sets requirements for an Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS). It guides organizations in the responsible governance and management of AI technologies. The standard helps companies manage risks and ensure AI systems are used ethically.
The certification covers both Binance’s internal use of AI and the design, implementation, and management of AI systems throughout the company. It ensures that AI tools are applied responsibly, in accordance with international standards, and supports the safe development, implementation, and continuous monitoring of these technologies.
The process also guarantees that social impacts and effects on individuals and groups are assessed before implementation. By adopting this framework throughout the AI lifecycle, Binance strengthens the security, reliability, and accountability of its systems, aligning with emerging regulations such as the European Union’s AI Act.
Binance’s Commitment to Responsible AI
Jimmy Su, Chief Security Officer of Binance, stated:
“The ISO/IEC 42001 validates the structure we built around responsible AI. Governance, simply put, means having clear rules and effective oversight, but in practice, it’s about ensuring our AI behaves as expected, even as it becomes more complex. Our team sustains this through rigorous risk assessments, strong data protections, and continuous monitoring, keeping our systems secure, predictable, and aligned with global standards.”
The ISO/IEC 42001 certification integrates with other ISO programs already adopted by Binance, such as ISO 27001 (information security), ISO 27701 (privacy), and ISO 22301 (business continuity). This unified approach allows the company to streamline compliance and audit processes, while enabling efficient and scalable AI governance, supported by consolidated systems and clear responsibilities across teams.
Reinforcing Governance and Trust
Richard Teng, co-CEO of Binance, commented:
“Achieving the ISO/IEC 42001 certification reflects Binance’s strong commitment to responsible innovation. In conjunction with our recent full regulatory authorization granted by the FSRA of the ADGM, it reinforces the standards of governance and supervision that we are building globally. As AI technologies evolve, we will continue to maintain the highest levels of transparency and user protection, strengthening trust across the Web3 sector.”
The certification was granted by A-LIGN, a recognized compliance assessor accredited by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) to perform ISO/IEC 42001 certifications.
