Brazilian Air Force Exam Includes “Bitcoin” in Portuguese Language Question

For the first time, the Brazilian Air Force’s entrance exam for Officer Training Courses (Aviators, Quartermasters, and Infantry) for the year 2026 featured the term “bitcoins” in a Portuguese language question. The official answer key, released after appeals, was made public on Friday the 18th.

To answer correctly, students had to analyze a cartoon from “Vida de Suporte,” depicting a workplace scenario. The 2020 satire shows a boss, wearing a mask, telling an employee that the company’s systems are being hacked.

The employee asks if there’s a data backup. These attacks, known as ransomware, often target companies of all sizes and demand payment in cryptocurrencies as ransom.

The desperate boss says the hackers are trying to extort him for thousands of reais in bitcoins. He asks for the employee’s help, who offers to contribute R$ 5.00, his bus fare home. Bitcoin, it’s important to remember, is the world’s first decentralized digital currency.

The question appeared with different numbers across test versions: Q12 in version A, Q60 in B, and Q44 in C. Candidates had to identify option D as incorrect to get the answer right.

Candidate Appeals Question Featuring “Bitcoins” in Air Force Exam

The question containing “bitcoins” in the annual Brazilian Air Force exam prompted appeals from two candidates who disagreed with option D being the correct answer.

However, the admissions board upheld the original answer key in both cases.

In response to the unsuccessful appeals, the board explained why option D was the only incorrect one.

“c) ‘Bitcoins’ – ‘Bitcoin’ is a foreign word, but its use is widely accepted in contemporary Portuguese. The lack of a direct translation does not constitute a grammatical error — it simply indicates a modern lexical usage,” the board stated in its response.

After the appeals phase, successful candidates will undergo various health exams and other stages, as outlined in the official notice signed by Air Major-Brigadier Marcelo Fornasiari Rivero in February 2025.
