In a special appearance on the YouTube program “Bom dia, Ministro” on CanalGov, the Attorney General of the Union, Jorge Messias (AGU), said that the investigation into the fraud of undue discounts at the National Institute of Social Security (INSS) has sought to track the cryptocurrencies of suspects.

During his speech, Messias stated that the government today has several mechanisms for precautionary action, in the civil and criminal spheres. However, the means of concealing assets have also modernized, when he cited the case of cryptocurrencies.

Thus, he indicated that the request to track cryptocurrencies reaches Brazilian cryptocurrency exchanges, which must collaborate with investigations into the INSS fraud, one of the biggest corruption scandals in Brazil in recent years.

It is very difficult to track cryptocurrencies, but we have instruments. In the blocking request that we made the week before last, we requested that tracking be done from cryptocurrency exchanges to understand where this resource went if it was used. Because there is a strong suspicion of using cryptocurrencies for asset embezzlement. There are now a series of strategies that the criminal system uses and needs to be combated, such as works of art. In this police operation, several works of art were seized, in addition to jewelry, gold, luxury cars… All of this needs to be converted into money so that the law is in fact converted into income and from that it is returned to public coffers, which will reimburse retirees and pensioners“, highlighted the Minister of the Attorney General of the Union.

Government working intensely to recover assets diverted from INSS, guaranteed Minister of the AGU

During his speech, Jorge Sampaio recalled that investigations are still underway to investigate the INSS fraud.

According to him, the Government of Brazil is working intensely to recover all missing assets and return them to retirees and pensioners harmed by the problem.

Right on the day of the operation, we already have around R$ 1 billion in blocked assets. Others, in the order of R$ 2.56 billion, were requested and are in the blocking phase, awaiting developments in the judicial process. The firm work of our prosecutors is to ensure that every cent that is eventually spent with the taxpayer’s money is fully reimbursed by those who, in fact, harmed retirees and pensioners“, highlighted Messias.

In addition to public servants, the minister also stated that 12 entities created with the aim of fraud participated in the scheme, between 2019 and 2022. The case remains under investigation and the authorities are racing against time to avoid the crime of concealing assets, not only in cryptocurrencies.
